Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) is collaborating with ministries and agencies to strengthen the development of healthy Internet for children to welcome National Children’s Day (HAN) 2024.

“Smart children with a healthy Internet is one of the important points in 2024 HAN. Therefore, we establish strategic steps such as (signing) a memorandum of understanding (MoU),” KPAI Chairperson Ai Maryati said here on Monday.

She informed that her side will sign the MoU with the Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK), the Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo), and the National Police in the upcoming weeks.

According to her, the MoUs will support efforts to prevent children from falling prey to violence by preparing a road map for child protection online, as well as the implementation of a child-friendly electronic transactions system.

Over the past three months, the commission has noticed an increase in online child abuse, such as pornography, online gambling, online-based violence, grooming, extortion, and even, human trafficking, she said.

The KPAI has traced the increase in cases to children’s easy access to electronic transaction services without parental supervision.

“We have also found patterns of digital payments that are related to commercial sexual transactions, such as online game top-up offers as long as they send pictures of themselves in a sensual style or even, their private areas,” Maryati said.

Collaboration across ministries and agencies can enable follow-the-money investigations to arrest perpetrators and their networks, she informed.

“Because conventionally, the police may have not used the cyber approach, maybe even not at all, so there is an urgent need for a tool (to) see suspicious financial transactions,” she added.
